Did
You Know? The deal to construct Darlington was originally struck over a
Saturday night poker game at the city jail. Developer Harold Brasington
suggested to landowner Sherman Ramsey that they build a race track.
The
Mother's Day experiment under the lights worked. Darlington has always
been home to some of the best racing and closest finishes in the history of
NASCAR and remains a must-stop for the avid NASCAR fan.
If
your into watching for wrecks, the cars get extremely high in the turns here
and heading into Turn 1 on this egg-shaped track is tricky. This is
probably the best place to see a wreck.
Last
Year: A late race spin brought out the caution and forced overtime which
allowed Greg Biffle to
grab four fresh tires as well as the win in the Dodge Charger 500 on
May 7.
Facts To
Consider: Rick Hendrick has the most wins of any car owner here and Jeff Gordon leads all active drivers
with six. Gordon was second last season and since most expect Gordon to
have a come-back year this year, this could be one of his many trips to Victory
Lane. Since Darlington didn't make the test list, that could be bad news
for the many rookies running this race. However, since virtually all
of them will run the Busch race the night before, that will probably be a big
plus.
Another
Tidbit: The first race at Darlington took more than six hours to
complete, but since then Darlington has remained a track drivers love or
hate. It produces some of the most satisfying wins. "There's
no victory so sweet, so memorable, as whipping Darlington," said the late
great Dale Earnhardt, who whipped here nine times.
